CPT codes are a set of medical codes used to describe medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures and services performed by healthcare providers. These codes are maintained by the American Medical Association (AMA).

Types of CPT Codes
Category I
- Most common for procedures and services widely performed.
- Example: 99213 – Office visit, established patient.
Category II
- Optional tracking codes for performance measurement (not for billing).
- 4 digits followed by the letter F(e.g., 5005F)
Category III
- Temporary codes for emerging technologies and services
- 4 digits followed by the letter T(eg., 0052T).
The six main sections of CPT Category
1.Evaluation and Management (98000-98016, 99202–99499)
2.Anesthesia (00100–01999, 99100-99140)
3.Surgery (10004–69990) —further broken into smaller groups by body area or system within this code range
4.Radiology (Including Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Ultrasound) (70010–79999)
5.Pathology and Laboratory (80047–89398)
6.Medicine (90281–99199, 99500-99607)
